SUMMARY:Supporting Autistic People With Higher Support Needs: Tools for Communication\, Choice\, and Quality of Life
DESCRIPTION:Autism is a spectrum\, and autistic people have a wide range of support needs. Individuals with higher support needs may use limited or non-speaking forms of communication and may have difficulty understanding how their actions affect others. When appropriate supports are missing or mismatched\, these challenges can lead to behaviors that do not effectively communicate needs\, restrict autonomy\, or limit opportunities for choice and participation. Participants will explore evidence-based tools and strategies\, including visual supports\, social narratives\, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)\, that can strengthen communication\, expand choice\, and improve quality of life. In addition\, the session will examine how ableism is often embedded within support systems and how lowered expectations can unintentionally limit autonomy and growth.

DESCRIPTION:Coffee Club is a space where autistic and neurodiverse adults can connect with each other\, foster friendships\, and build community while enjoying a favorite beverage and/or snack. Adults are welcome to bring items that make them feel comfortable\, can stay as long as they’d like\, stim\, and parallel play. We ask that participants purchase something from our venues. \nAuSM will provide a concierge staff person to help assist with questions\, check-in\, help with ordering\, and manage any issues that arise during the club. AuSM will provide a number of resources\, including a social narrative providing club details\, parking info\, menus\, and more. Due to staffing\, AuSM is unable to provide one-to-one support\, however it is encouraged to bring your own PCA or support person if needed.

Tiffany will read her groundbreaking storybook\, A Day with No Words. She will be joined by advocates\, lawmakers\, and experts for a conversation about the current legislative movement to increase access to Augmented and Assistive Communication (AAC) devices for all people in Minnesota. Following the reading\, please join us for playtime on Gillette Children’s inclusive playground\, which features a children’s play space\, a meditative courtyard\, a wheelchair swing\, climbing structures\, and a fully accessible treehouse. \nTiffany Hammond is a New York Times bestselling author\, speaker\, and disability advocate. Her work centers the voices of autistic people and celebrates all forms of communication. She is the author of A Day with No Words and the upcoming picture book How Do You Spell Belong? (2027). Tiffany is also the voice behind Fidgets and Fries\, where she shares stories of advocacy\, identity\, and raising her two sons with autism. DESCRIPTION:For more than 30 years\, the Minnesota Autism Conference has been a place to learn\, connect\, and feel less alone — bringing together autistic adults\, caregivers\, educators\, service providers\, therapists\, and advocates from across Minnesota and beyond. \nIn 2026\, the Autism Society of Minnesota is making a thoughtful shift to a virtual\, two–half-day format. This change helps us respond to rising event costs and budget challenges from 2025 while lowering the overall cost to our community. Going virtual allows us to keep this conference accessible to more people — no travel\, no hotel costs\, less time away from work or caregiving\, and more flexibility for how and when you participate. \nThe heart of the conference stays the same. The format just makes it easier to join.

You’ll learn all about the diagnosis\, common characteristics\, and some basic evidenced-based best practices to support autistic individuals and sensory processing sensitivities. Each session lasts one hour with time for you to ask specific questions. \nWho Should Participate\nCaregivers\, parents\, grandparents\, group home and day program staff\, Personal Care Attendants\, and health care staff will benefit from this class. *Note\, this is a single-session class. DESCRIPTION:If you’re a professional who works with autistic clients – or are working towards your licensure so you can – AuSM’s Counseling and Consulting team has a resource to help you connect with therapists in our space.  AuSM’s Professional Networking Group offers a chance for therapists to meet with other professionals who see clients with autism to ask questions\, share cases\, and build peer-to-peer relationships. \nThis group is meant for: \n\nTherapists\nPsychologists\nOccupational therapists\nPsychiatrists\nSocial workers\nCase managers\nHealthcare providers\n\nAs we meet\, one member of AuSM’s staff will share an anonymized case study\, then open the group for others to share relevant experiences that we can all learn from. This is a great opportunity to troubleshoot your problems and learn from the wisdom of other professionals as we work through challenging cases. \nWith increased diagnosis of autism\, therapists are becoming aware that they need to increase competency in serving these clients; this group can help.
