Centering Joy: Lessons Learned from a Family Camp for Autistic Children in the Somali and Oromo Communities

The idea of sending kids off to summer camp is a cultural touchstone for many families, but for those in the Somali and Oromo communities the concept of camp is unfamiliar. The idea of sending autistic children to a camp in the woods is almost unthinkable. Yet that is exactly what families from the Somali and Oromo communities did in the fall of 2023 when they attended a family camp hosted by the Autism Society of Minnesota and the Multicultural Autism Action Network in partnership with Camp Knutson. Hear from a panel of campers, family members, and organizers about how a weekend in the woods proved to be a transformative experience for all involved.
