Nontraditional Language Learning Styles
From scripting and echolalia to communicating with an AAC device, many Autistic individuals speak and express language differently than an allistic population. While speech language pathology has been developing new methodologies to target Autistic language development, the education world remains stuck in a Science of Reading based one size fits all approach to literacy instruction. This presentation will provide an overview of differences in language acquisition common in Autism, and will teach educators how to use scripting and echolalia to their advantage in their literacy instruction for Autistic students.
