Foundational Workshop 2025

A large group of people seated around round tables in a conference room. The participants are engaged in conversations, with plates and cups on the tables. The room has a neutral-colored interior with warm lighting and a carpeted floor.

Join us for this year’s Foundational Workshop, held on April 16, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. This workshop is perfect for those beginning their autism journey or experienced participants looking to revisit essential information. CE credits are available. We’ll include a fresh focus on trending topics in the autism community, designed to prepare you for the conference sessions ahead. The Foundational Workshop is included in both in-person and virtual conference registrations.

About the Foundational Workshop

The workshop kicks off with two concurrent sessions designed to meet your needs:

Option 1: Autism 101A speaker presenting to an audience in a conference room. A slide is displayed on a large screen, featuring text and images under the title "A Growing Global Movement." The audience members are seated and focused on the presentation. A sign language interpreter stands to the right of the screen, gesturing.
This session provides a comprehensive introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Autism is a form of neurodiversity, and this session helps frame ASD as a difference rather than a disorder. You’ll gain insights into how autism impacts thinking, behavior, and social interaction. Additionally, you’ll explore strategies for fostering success across various environments. Whether you’re new to autism or seeking a refresher, this session will broaden your understanding of the autistic experience.

Option 2: Conference Orientation
Autistic individuals looking for guidance on navigating the conference will benefit from this orientation. Think of it as an in-person social narrative, where we’ll cover where to find sessions and resources, who to reach out to for help, what’s on the schedule, and key social norms for the event. This is an excellent opportunity to ask questions and gain confidence before the main conference begins.

TRENDING TOPICS AND DISCUSSIONS
After the introductory sessions, everyone will reconvene to dive into Updates on Autism Prevalence and explore Trending Topics in the autism community. This year’s focus includes:

  • Self-care and its importance in daily life.
  • Unmasking and embracing authenticity.
  • Responding to stigma and debunking common myths about autism.

CLOSING SMALL GROUP DISCUSSIONS
The workshop concludes with small group discussions (3:30-4:30 p.m.), where you’ll reflect on what you’ve learned, connect with others, and brainstorm strategies tailored to your unique role or experiences.

Whether you’re an educator, a family member, or an autistic individual joining the community, this workshop offers a foundational understanding of autism and prepares you to get the most out of the conference.
