Assessing Transition Needs Among Individuals With Disabilities and Caregivers

There is a lack of research on appropriate transition supports for individuals with disabilities. To address this gap, data regarding current and needed transition supports were less. This will be collected from 47 respondents who either cared for or were a person with a disability (PWD) themselves. Results showed that there was inadequate availability of information about transitioning into adulthood. Respondents discussed how sociocultural identities at the personal and family level can impact transitioning trajectories. They also voiced concerns regarding vocational issues, social support/relationships, and functional skills. This presentation outlines the current transition needs of PWDs and caregivers with a focus on sociocultural backgrounds. We will share quotes from survey respondents to illustrate personal accounts of their experiences and recommendations for future transition supports.
