Autism: Beyond the Male Phenotype

Autism: Beyond the Male Phenotype

Males with autism far outnumber females, right? Not so fast. Recent investigations reveal a vast number of females are “hiding in plain sight.” The ratio of males to females appears to be much lower than previously thought. This session will explore new understandings of gender and autism, including obstacles to diagnosing those who do not present with the male phenotype, the overlap with sexual and gender minorities (SGM), and the intersection with eating disorders. We’ll pay special attention to the experiences of teens and adolescents, a time when many people explore their gender and begin to understand their identities. There is a significant cost for these females and non-binary individuals when they are inaccurately or not diagnosed. This presentation will discuss how we can better identify autism so support can be rendered.
