Decreasing the Stigma – Talking to Children about Neurodivergence

Often, children and teens don’t receive feedback from neuropsychological evaluations, leaving parents unsure about if they should share the information with their child, and how to do so. Research shows that early disclosure of an autism diagnosis benefits children and adolescents by fostering a positive self-image, self-advocacy, community building, and understanding their neurodevelopmental differences neutrally. I will discuss the importance of sharing diagnoses with children and provide tips on how to talk about neurodevelopmental and mental health diagnoses with children and teens. Additionally, I will explain why it’s vital to discuss neurodiversity with all children, including neurotypical ones, early on.
