Proprioception and Sensory-based Strategies for Improved Emotional Regulation using a Family-Centered Approach

In this presentation, a parent and their child’s occupational therapist partner to offer practical strategies using proprioception, sensory modulation, and self-regulation principles to improve co-regulation and function in the daily activities that are important to individual families. In the process, caregivers gain knowledge about themselves as well as their child’s needs while considering the inter- relationships with a family from a sensory and regulation standpoint. We will position occupational therapy as a family approach where the occupational therapist provides coaching, guidance and practical tips to the entire family with emphasis on how individual needs impact the whole, the importance of meeting the caregivers’ regulation needs to improve regulation in the child while considering the child’s unique sensory needs, improving family members’ ability to enjoy each other, have compassion for each other, and honor and celebrate individual difference.
