Strategies for Community Organizing

Autistic self-advocates possess something our allies do not – lived experience, but our experiences are not all the same. For our movement to be successful, we must advocate not for ourselves, but for each other. Empathy is at the heart of any successful community organizing effort. Without empathy, advocacy can be self-serving, self-referential, and self-defeating. Autistic self-advocates are not an exclusive club defined by diagnosis, or a helpless minority in need of saving; we are a community fighting for our own self-determination. Join Daren Howard, Deputy Director of AuSM, in creating empathy maps of our movement’s key stakeholders as a foundation for lasting change. This interactive activity requires participation, which may be challenging for viewers online. If you are following along at home, share your work and thoughts with AuSM after the session by emailing education@ausm.org.
