Understanding and Addressing Barriers to Accessing Early Support

Understanding and Addressing Barriers to Accessing Early Support

Accessing services for children with autism and related neurodevelopmental disabilities can be challenging and often comes with many barriers, including geographic location (rural vs. urban), language, socioeconomic status, race, and understanding of the system. Our presentation aims to provide information related to common barriers that children and their families face in Minnesota when seeking an evaluation and after their child is diagnosed with autism or related neurodevelopmental disabilities. We hope to illuminate ways to navigate different aspects of life after receiving a diagnosis. We plan to address language barriers, barriers to county services, and barriers to childcare.
