The foundations of relationships – things like mutual trust, kindness, and respect – can be more complicated than they sound. It can be difficult to know how to set boundaries and communicate your needs, and it can be just as difficult to understand the needs and boundaries of others. Then finding balance can add an extra layer of difficulty. This workshop will discuss the challenges of communication within various relationship structures (romantic, platonic, familial, and sexual), ways to express your needs, and understand the needs of others through a neurodivergent lens.

Objectives:

By the end of the session, participants will…  

  1. Identify core elements that support healthy relationships across romantic, platonic, familial, and sexual contexts.

  2. Recognize common communication challenges that can arise in relationships when needs, expectations, or boundaries are unclear.

  3. Practice strategies for expressing personal needs and boundaries in ways that are direct, respectful, and self-affirming.

  4. Develop skills for interpreting and responding to the needs and boundaries of others through a neurodivergent-affirming lens.

  5. Apply tools for finding balance between personal autonomy and mutual connection within diverse relationship structures.

Presenters

Kendrick Hogue is a licensed professional clinical counselor (LPCC) providing therapy at AuSM and a neurodivergent nerd who loves helping folks across the gender and sexuality spectrums get to know themselves more, practice self-acceptance, and thrive. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theology, Secondary Education, and Classics from St. Joseph’s College of Maine, and his Master of Arts in Clinical Counseling from Southern New Hampshire University.
